I honestly did open the meditation app - but Boaz and I got colds the other week that turned into these horrible old-timey-sounding coughs, and the meditation kept telling me to breathe in or breathe out and that’s easier said and than done right now.
Do you like meditating, and how do you define it? Do you remember when everyone sort of agreed that meditation made you float off the ground? Why did we think that? Why have I never found another person who finds Sims 4 Twitch streams as soothing as I do? And, most importantly, if a ziplock bag full of noodles is sentient, which part is sentient - the bag or the noodles?
My latest and favorite book, HOW DO MEERKATS ORDER PIZZA, came out in paperback last week! That means you can now buy a paperback copy at your local bookstore, or find a copy with the softness of your choosing at your library.
I’m finally reading Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow, after keeping it by my bed to use in case of self-defense for the last year. Its heaviness was off-putting but now that I’m reading it instead of just sleeping near it, I like it.
I hope your brain is nice to you this week, and that all the parts of your body are strong in the ways they need to be, and that your dogs don’t hate going outside in the cold as much as mine does.
Sorry Kip.
I have THOUGHTS today. My apologies to everyone subjected to the following block of text.
1) Your mention of wolves made me think of this advice column I read today:
https://slate.com/human-interest/2023/10/stray-dog-care-and-feeding.html
2) I went to a meditation workshop on Saturday. I fell asleep. Apparently a very deep sleep, because in my dream, my daughter said something to me and I grunted in response. Except I grunted out loud, woke myself up, and probably everyone else. I would still like to crawl into a hole over that.
3) I do Peloton and frequently do their meditations, but I always fall asleep (but in my bed, where it is socially acceptable).
4) I'm a lapsed Catholic, and probably now more of an agnostic than anything, but I still catch myself praying the rosary when I'm stressed or worried or can't sleep. I guess old habits die hard.
5) Clearly, it is the noodles are are sentient, not the bag.
I loved reading this comic so much! The brain looks like it could be green and orange and all colorful like a vintage sneaker! I meditate using Headspace. I too used to think that meditation was about floating and going out of your body, but it can be very much simpler and less spiritual (which I prefer). To me meditation feels like opening the windows and letting in fresh air. I've been meditating everyday for almost a year and I've noticed I can more easily say no to things I don't like. I feel closer to my body and I can more distantly think about my feelings or states of mind. Maybe it does make your brain more powerful?
