My family has a family friend that worries a lot about their daughter. They’ve been worrying loudly about their daughter for most of my life, so I’ve had a lot of time to think about it. I have a lot of questions. What are they worried would happen if she dated someone shorter?
I am six feet tall and my husband is 5’3” and shrinking. When we first met I wore lots of clunky 90’s heels and towered over him like godzilla. He never cared, but I got tired of bending over. So I gave up the heels. We are both great at making each other feel big, and I can say that our height difference has never been an issue between us, but other people REALLY care about it for some reason. Love is love and sometimes you have to stand on tippy toes or bend down to get it.
Have you ever read The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster? (Surely you have!) In the book, Milo (the main character) visits a land where, when a baby is born, the top of it’s head is at the height it will be when it grows up. As each baby matures, it grows down, reaching full height when it’s feet touch the ground. The great concern among these people is that a child might not reach it’s full height, and their feet will never touch the ground.
When I have friends who fuss about the height of their child, I tell them about this, and try to assure them that, as long as their child grows tall enough so that their feet touch the ground, they will be perfectly fine!
