In a world full of fruit salad, taco salad, chicken salad, pasta salad, not to mention how many ways a green salad can exist, it always seemed wild to me. But she swore it was true.
I realize that this might seem like a similar blanket statement, but:
I know live events can be so many things. A Taylor Swift concert, a karate graduation, the wonders of opera, modern dance, musicals, wow such talent, but at the end of the day they all involve the same thing I can’t stand:
Look, at least on a plane they let you move around, and read, and you know when it’s going to end. No live event can transport you the way a plane can. And I would know, I’ve seen a lot of live events, because Boaz likes them.
This weekend Boaz achieved a new level of celebrity, and was invited to do a walk-on role in the Nutcracker Ballet. I know what walk-on roles are from an episode of Handsome but in case you don’t: it means he didn’t need to learn ballet or any lines, they just had him onstage in the scenes, as a delighted party guest.
Getting to see a loved one in a walk-on role in the Nutcracker Ballet is something I wish for every single person reading this. You’re watching a performance that is SEVERAL HOURS long, but guess who’s up there on stage in a tuxedo, pretending to eat cookies with the dancers! It was amazing. It seemed like the whole show only lated a few seconds, I wish they’d done an encore. Here’s one of fifty blurry photos I took - I added lines above Boaz in case for some reason you’d be looking anywhere else:
So, I take back what I said about all live events.
Have you enjoyed any live events lately? Do you have a food you don’t like? I actually have a category of foods I don’t like that is as large as salad, but I don’t like admitting because I keep hoping it’s something I’ll grow out of.
Best news in the newsletter: My local bookstore ordered a batch of books for me to do custom animal drawings in tomorrow!
If you want to buy someone (or yourself) a book with an animal of your choice drawn inside click this link, and make sure to add the animal and intended recipient in the “Notes” box at checkout.
Drawing custom animals in books is my favorite thing to do, and I dare you to make your requests as specific as you want. If you want two seagulls wearing Grateful Dead hoodies and eating lasagna, if you want animals representing the mascots for each team your favorite athlete has played on, if you want to find a bird species I’ve never heard of, I’m here for it.
I hope your week is full of great things and people you love, thanks for reading my newsletter.
For me, live events tend to be standing around watching bands playing in clubs, and I don't love those anymore. I started going to those in my teens, and it stopped being fun somewhere along the line. Sitting-down ones, like plays or ballets, are fine.
I'm not a fan "wet foods" as a category but I have a number of exceptions. I don't love soups or curry but I do like chilli con carne and a soupy ramen.
