On a date Boaz and I were eavesdropping on last month, both people went to the same university but one of them claimed she’d never heard of a major campus landmark. Even Boaz and I both knew about the landmark. Did she even actually go to the university? Was she just not paying attention? Was she lying? Those two had so little chemistry that I wondered if it was just a networking meeting or a mini family reunion. I would have watched another episode but it wasn’t possible.
I liked that the guy at lunch admitted he didn’t know Anything Goes was a musical, and was open to it being a style of performance where they just decide what to do as the play goes along. I think if I were him, I would have nodded and said “cool” and looked it up later, and we all would have been worse off for it.
Do you like eavesdropping on people when you’re out in the world? Have you caught any good dates? Are you the type of person who admits when you don’t know anything about plays or matcha or nearby landmarks? Have you been on a date lately? It seems like such an intense improvisational experience.
Twice on walks this week strangers looked at Kip and said to me “Wow, what an old dog.” When they say it, he seems to age before my eyes. It doesn’t feel nice, but I guess they just can’t help it. He must be looking older every day.
Not this Sunday but next Sunday I have an event at Love, Pittsburgh in, you guessed it, Pittsburgh. It’s at 2pm, come say hi! I’d love to see you.
Thanks for being here. I hope you overhear a good conversation this week, that you call your representatives, and that your dog gets two years younger.
I LOVE eavesdropping. I have passed this love along to my children. We have such a great memory of eating lunch out in total silence so we could listen to the married couple next to us bicker rather viciously over whether there would be a waiter come take their order or whether they needed to order at the counter.
I loved this column (or is it a piece?). I love all these NNN things. I wish I could overhear more - in fact, any - dates. How old *is* Kip? I would hate people saying that about Cookie (who will be seven on May 5th).
