We've been seeing lots of chipmunks and rabbits lately. My dogs want to kill them or at least chase them, but of course I don't let them get close. I have no quarrel with the bunnies, and I have a particular fondness for chipmunks because they're so tiny and pretty.
I live in Pittsburgh & have a beach house in Pawleys Island SC. Yesterday I took a bike ride on our beach, headed north at low tide with the wind at my back and a goal of making it to the Murrells Inlet jetty. Upon my arrival I was fortunate to see not 1, not 2, but 3 juvenile loggerhead sea turtles bobbing in the waves on the leeward side of the jetty! They were absolutely beautiful and thrilling to see. As I rode inland toward the salt marsh I saw a mink making a feast out of mussels & clams exposed by the low tide. Nature is beautiful.
I really enjoy your writing and look forward to your posts.
I'm loving the rat series! We actually have three pet rats, who are very friendly and cute. So I'm a rat person! I feel sad about the one who died in your trash can, but love the photo of the "sick" rat coughing. Your drawings are hilarious- keep them coming!
I think we still have a rat as well! I'm a little glad, because there's a Cooper's hawk nest in a neighboring tree, and I've seen the parent hawks bring the kids long-tailed snacks. Some part of me roots for the much-maligned little things. Perhaps I'll feel differently when strawberries start to go missing, but for now, enjoying the complexity.
I feel so validated that other people have these complicated animal relationships. We have a single fat groundhog that ambles around our yard and eats my pollinator garden. We named him Thomas Quartermain and now are so torn that apparently his tunnels against the house may one day cause our foundation to crumble. What a little warrior!
I’d been keeping track of a phoebe nest under our deck, and yesterday I had a suspicion that the babies had fledged. Sure enough, the parents started hopping around in the bushes and acting upset when my two little dogs, Mayo and Noodle, went to one part of the yard. I walked over and there was a little fledgling sitting still in the grass. Eventually Noodle noticed it and walked over to investigate. Once the baby started to move, then both dogs chased it. My son and I screamed our heads off at the dogs to LEAVE IT! and the baby just barely got away. PHEW!
I even have a video of the baby and then pandemonium as we start running and yelling.
I am here for the rat drama!
Your link to the doc didn’t work for me
A black bear was strolling through my suburban neighborhood last fall and I witnessed it drinking from my backyard birdbath!
So cool!

Rats can swim through sewer lines and come up in your toilet!
For some reason the image of Kip’s little butt running away with the ‘brb’ bubble has me cracking up and just made my day!
Good band name = Teenage Robin
I love the rat updates, please keep telling us about the rats.
