This is quite personal! I have 13 pairs of underpants which I bought c. 25 years ago , once I didn't have children at home to buy unders for. Mine have never seen the inside of a dryer, thus their longevity. I've spent a good deal of money trying to replace them but none fit me as well as my tried a true oldies, which are in pretty good shape, except the cotton liners were getting holey. So, I just finished snipping out the old and sewing in the new. We'll see how they fare. Who says granny panties aren't great?
I sometimes save favorite sentences in the Notes app on my phone, but then I forget the context, so the sentences seem less impressive. I still do it, though.
When I read Sandwich by Catherine Newman there were SO MANY good sentences that I just wanted to write out and save. I didn't, but I should go back and do that!
My favorite thing that DOES give me the most licks is my cat. I wish she'd stop licking my face to wake me up, but she discovered that it's very effective. Another favorite is my wallet. It's handmade out of blue leather and pretty small. I can fit a few cards stacked up, folded bills and coins in there. It fits into every pocket and bag. I bought it on vacation in France ca. 2009.
I always save favorite quotes from books in my commonplace book. I recently got the idea from the substack Coffee with Angel to start including my thoughts about the quotes with them so I can remember why they were so important to me when I read them.
I have a new baby niece who's just discovered her smile muscles and she too seems so happily surprised every time she sees a familiar face. I love it!! 🥰
It’s from Vaster Than Empires and More Slow, a short story in the Hainish cycle. I read it in The Found and the Lost, a collection of her short stories.
That’s a bit of a throwaway line though. The story is mostly about an autistic empath. I too would have liked to learn more about this Beldeine.
I sometimes (ok, frequently...ok always) put all my non-time sensitive emails in a "To-Read" folder and catch up when I'm in the mood and can read uninterrupted. I would like to be the person that reads everything the day I receive it but waiting for the timing to be right is just a luxury I can't give up. ANYWAY, I'm over-explaining to say that I read this newsletter today - a month late - and wanted to share that I had highlighted a sentence you wrote in your May 19 letter: "I actually have a strong opinion on this after decades of thought, but I can hold off to hear other opinions first." That both cracked me up and sounded so true! So, yes, I do have favorite sentences, too. LOVE your writing!!
I def track favorite sentences. If I’m reading a physical book, I underline, if I’m reading a digital book, I screenshot. The goal is to rewrite them in my journal, though I often fail, and then I have dozens (hundreds?) of screenshots I feel I can’t delete… Do you know the best sentences of the week roundup in the Times? I think Frank Bruni is the one who rounds them up at the end of his newsletter… sometimes I’ve picked out the same sentence in my reading, but most often it turns me on to some new piece of writing to check out. Dogs are the best! I just googled "why do I love my dog so much."

What a treasure of a book
I love lovely sentences and we don’t have to all love the same lovely sentences 📚

My husband! Not flashy, kind of old, but I am always happy to see him again!
I’m save good sentences in notes on my phone. The most recent is from Ursula le Guin:
Beldeine, the garden planet, had never discovered chastity. Or the wheel.
Oh my. What is this from? I’m so intrigued!!!

Thank you :)

I have some of the quirkily worded sentences and phrases from Severance in a notes app because they blew my little mind.
I loved Long Island Compromise! It was one of my favorite books I read last year. The other one was The Rachel Incident.
What are the odds?
Love!
And im curious to know favorite sentences. There should be a whole post or website dedicated to this
I could not love this more! What are the odds?
I get licks from my cat Toby and from my daughter’s dog Jax. They both get on the recliner with me and want to be petted at the same time.
